Our historic rendering of Boston From the Charles is one of our most popular. Prominently featured in the view of the Charles River are the two John Hancock Towers. The larger of the two, colloquially known as “The Hancock” is a 60-story skyscraper on Clarendon Street. Completed in 1976 by the firm of I.M. Pei & Partners, it is the tallest building in Boston. It’s observation deck has been closed since September 11, 2001.
The smaller “old John Hancock Tower” is now called the Berkeley Building. It’s flashing beacon is a treasured landmark forecasting weather since 1950:
