Last call on the following schools

Eglomise Designs has been working with many major Colleges and Universities, some for over 50 years, to provide their students, graduates, and employees with high quality heirloom gifts to commemorate their accomplishments at these institutions. Part of this means paying royalties on the items we sell to institutions that license their names, something we both understand and abide by.

Every summer at the beginning of July we pay an administrative processing fee and a royalty deposit to use many University and College names on our artwork. The prices of this have been going up year after year and this year the administrative fee at one agency is moving from a maximum of $2,500 up to $17,500. That is one single agency that we process licenses through and that is BEFORE the deposit and royalties we pay throughout the year. These deposits may be $300, $500 or $5,000 per school that is requested for a deposit against sales throughout the year against a royalty rate that is often between 12%-18%. This may not sound like much but Eglomise Designs has over 200 licensed schools so even at the minimum that comes to a minimum of $60,000 before the administrative fees.

In normal years we make 50% or more of our sales in April and May, graduation is the big time for us. We depend upon those sales to place a deposit and renewal for licensing of a school name. When we cannot afford this either because the deposit is too large or a school says we are not allowed to renew because we have had too few sales of that school we “drop” that school. We still own the beautiful artwork of ours but we cannot put the school name on it. Not legally. Not honorably.

This is why many schools are unavailable, it is not because we don't have the artwork or that we do not want to sell it, it is because the licensing fees are too extreme to support the sales of 4 mirrors over the course of a whole year. This pains us but there isn't much we can do, the system is designed for people making t-shirts and cheap plastic trinkets imported from low wage countries. At Eglomise Designs we pride ourselves in hand making lasting heirloom gifts in the USA by trained artists. We source all of our materials from American manufacturers wherever possible, and try to support local businesses.

With the licensing costs going up by a multiple this year, combined with the lack of sales due to Covid-19, we simply don't have the money to license the same number of schools for the 2020-2021 year. In the past we have carried several schools we have had a relationship with for decades even though the licenses fees made selling them a break-even or even loss-making exercise. Unfortunately the combined issues of lower sales and vastly increased licensing fees leaves us with no option but to strictly limit the number of schools we can offer in the coming year.

We will continue to offer as many schools as possible but that number will be sharply reduced. Those schools that we do not re-license can be picked up again if there is sufficient interest. For those schools that had few or no sales in the 2019-2020 year, we will be requiring a $5,000 minimum order on these schools to cover the costs of re-licensing them.

We apologize for this change and wish we had different answers. You can still purchase these schools before June 15th of this year through us or our normal sales channels. After that we will be moving to the $5,000 minimum along with other schools we are no longer licensed with. As an example, Notre Dame's deposit and administration processing are significantly more than that and so we will not be relicensing those without a much larger order than the $5,000 minimum.

**If you are with a school administrator or president's office please contact us at orders@eglomisedesigns.com for additional licensing options.

As a small woman owned and woman operated business since 1965 we have depended upon our very loyal customers. Between Covid-19 and the licensing increases, we are struggling to keep our doors open. Currently sales are at 10% or less of a normal graduation season and we do not guarantee any schools will be available after June of this year. We are trying to make plans to continue operation and are CURRENTY (as of May 2020) open. We are running on a two to three week out shipping schedule in our attempts to comply with the current social distancing rules in our area as well as keeping our employees as safe as possible.

The schools we cannot afford to keep are the following.  More may be added to the list as we are supplied with final processing and deposit costs.  Yes, this is heartbreaking.  We wish we had other options.

Covid-19 update for Eglomise Designs

Our shop in Minnesota is still open.
Please allow additional ordering time as we may be short-handed as our policy has always been to keep sick people at home.
We want you to know that your product arrives safe and disease free. We realize that there is a great deal of information we do not yet know about this disease. We are not changing any of our standard practices because of this disease. However, our standard practices have always been protective of our employees and our workplace. As a woman-owned and woman-managed company we have always requested ill employees stay home and heal. It does no one any good to spread a cold or the flu around when we are such a small shop. We require, standard, our artisans to wear gloves for the sake of protecting their hands from cuts as they work with glass and to keep fingerprints to a minimum on your product. They are offered nitrile gloves as well as kevlar gloves for safety. The staff wear both of these at the same time while working. They are sent home if they are sick so no one else gets ill. We use isopropyl alcohol and windex to clean products before packaging. The glass is cleaned before being painted and tools and equipment are used with gloves on and obviously cleaned on a very regular basis. As always, we wish to give you, our customers, the best possible service while keeping a healthy and happy team.  We will provide an update if we see a disruption to order fulfillment.  As your order is not made until you order it please do allow time for our team to paint the glass and glue, nail, assemble all of the pieces of your order.

Supply Chain issues:

MINNESOTA to be specific.  This means we have materials to make your gift special.
Additionally we do not expect any material disruptions due to materials from China as we source the majority of our materials from the US, Canada, Italy, and other parts of South East Asia. We purchase our moulding many months ahead of our busy season so it can be made into frames before you order. If you have a particularly large order of paperweights we might have an issue as we are still working on quality control with new suppliers for paperweights. This is a separate issue from any manufacturing in China being shut down. Your heirloom gift is made here in our Minnesota shop after you place your order so until MN is shut down we do not expect any difficulties.
Wishing everyone good health and safety as we pull together to get through this difficult time.

Holiday Shipping Guide 2019

It seems too soon but it is headed our way.  Because our product is made by hand and uses paint which requires at a very minimum 24 hours to dry we need time to make your gifts.  Gold paint sometimes needs more than one application and so this is a very tight timeline.  We want you to have the very best gift.  But we also need time for our people to actually make your gift!

The last day to order for Christmas is December 17th, 2019 before 3pm.  This is for regular shipping

The last day to order with upgraded shipping is December 19th before 12pm.  This would use 2 day shipping and require upgraded shipping charges.  You will need to call in a credit card for upgraded shipping.

For our administrators that order bulk notecards for holiday mailings the last day to order is November 18th, 2019.  All proof approvals must be finalized by November 20th, 2019 to give us enough time to make and ship your order.  Ask about pre-addressed envelopes.  We've offered this service as a time savings and your address list, as always, is treated with full confidentiality.

Our shop is closed from December 21st, 2019 through January 1st, 2020 for our staff to rest, visit family, do laundry, oh wait, no all of those special things that matter.  We will be back and ready to help you with your gift, special occasion and personalization on January 2, 2020.  Happy New Year!!

Ginny is Feeling the Love!

Customer appreciation letter and handmade scarf

We love getting positive feedback! Last week, Ginny of customer service received a beautiful, hand-knit scarf from Barbara in Florida with a note enclosed:

"From me to U -

With appreciation for making a grandmother's wish happen."

We love making precious life moments even more special with our handmade gifts, and are amazed by the creativity of our customers!

We are returning to our ROOTS!

Eglomise means "reverse painted glass"

When we began in 1965 every piece was individually painted.  When we brought on personalization in the late 1990s we moved to a lithography process and the color was no longer applied directly to the glass.

But we're bringing it back.  Color on the reverse side of glass.  This means some slight re-design to allow for an efficient process.  Since we cannot make your order until we recieve it with personalization details we have to run, run, run to give the color enough dry time.  You will recognize our signature style with a reverse of your school color and real gold paint!  Bringing authentic eglomise to your home and office.

Please allow 5-7 days for making your order as we need to allow for dry time.  We are thrilled to now be applying real color to the glass in true 'verre eglomise'  for all products except our clocks.  Our clocks will take more time for re-design and will continue to be made in the way you've seen the last decade or so.  We hope to have clocks finished by October.

Father's Day

We promised you something special for Father's Day and its here!  We have four paperweights celebrating that first game of Go Fish your Dad played with you.

We all love the look of historical artifacts.  Days gone by when kings wore fur and queens wore a ruff.  We've updated it a bit with colors common in our Traditional line but we are sure Dad will love this paperweight.
